Our thoughtful, simple guide to cloth diapering

30/1/2019

In the last post, I discussed about the different modern reusable nappy systems available on the market. To make the process of choosing the right system (or systems) for your family easier, I created a guide to help you navigate through the different choices.

Keeping the pros and cons of each system in mind, I also wanted to make a couple of remarks:
  1. By "economical", I mean budget friendly. For those who speak German, I think the word gunstig is a great translation. Of course, using cloth over disposables will always be economical.
  2. I measured the ease of use by how straightforward using the system would be for a person who has never or rarely used reusable diapers. I also took into consideration the amount of time it takes to put the nappy on a wiggly child.
  3. If you do plan to use your cloth nappies when you go out or at the daycare, I recommend Velcro/hook-and-loop closure over the snap buttons/poppers. It's simply much easier and faster to use on a child.
Happy navigation!

Different types of modern cloth diaper systems: their pros and cons

For those who are completely new to the modern cloth diaper adventures, you might be surprised how advanced reusable nappies have become since the days that your grandparents (or maybe even parents) twisted, folded and pined a sheet of cotton cloth on baby's bum. Although this option still exists and works wonderfully for many families, modern reusable diapers have been developed over the years to mimic the convenience and ease-of-use of disposables.

That's great news for all families who would like to try reusable nappies, but perhaps were a bit reluctant about giving up the comfort of using disposables. With improved technology and an updated fit, you'd be surprised how similar cloth diapers are to disposables in terms of comfort, fit, and even convenience.

Nevertheless, with all the many different choices available, it can be a bit overwhelming to find the right type of reusable diaper for your child.

Our top five reasons for using reusable diapers

Thoughtful Shop Bear and Diaper Stash
In our last post, I wrote about how we first arrived at the idea of using cloth diapers. As new parents, we did a lot of research prior to the arrival of LO, including about diapering a baby, and subsequently, modern, reusable cloth nappies.

In the end, we came across five compelling reasons in our research that motivated us to use cloth diapers:

  1. Better for the environment
  2. Better for baby
  3. Not an all-or-nothing choice
  4. Good for our wallet
  5. Many delightful prints and colors

Why our family use cloth

1/1/2019

When we found out we were about to become parents a couple of years back, immediately I started reading reviews and articles about the best (and safest) baby products available. Yes, I was that person.

Even way before we were expecting, and long before we started a family of our own, we always felt uneasy about the unsustainable amount of waste we produce in our daily lives. Even in Switzerland, where the waste is not necessarily dumped in a landfill, we still manage to be the second country in Europe that produces the highest level of waste.

With the amount of disposable diapers children use on average before they are completely potty-trained being in the several thousands, we knew there had to me a more sustainable way.

It wasn't long before we discovered modern cloth diapers in our research.

Find out our five main reasons why we use cloth diapers for our LO in our next post. Stay tuned and subscribe to our newsletter to receive the latest update on our blog, promotions and products!
